मिट्टी से मिलो

MEET THE EARTH · THE SOHRAI CHRONICLES

"This is not decoration. It is devotion. A ritual act of welcoming the harvest, invoking protection for the family, and celebrating the sacred bond between humans, animals, and the soil."

The Living Canvas of Hazaribagh

Sohrai is one of India's oldest living art forms. Practiced primarily by women from tribal communities in the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, it is a mural painting tradition created every year before the harvest festival of the same name.

Women gather and paint the earthen walls of their homes using natural earth pigments — colored clay, charcoal, and rice paste — applied with raw fingers, twigs, and simple cloth swabs.

Pulled From The Earth

The motifs of Sohrai are drawn from the immediate world around the artist: peacocks, fish, deer, tigers, and interlocking geometric patterns that describe the interconnectedness of all living things.

What makes Sohrai visually distinct is its raw warmth. Deep reds, ambers, soot blacks, and soft creams that feel like they were pulled straight from the ground. Because they were.

मिट्टी से मिलो is CLOY’s quiet reinterpretation of this ancient ritual into four minimal, wearable silhouettes — each carrying a distinct motif and rhythm from the Sohrai world.

THE FOUR MOTIFS

01

MAYUR

The Peacock

The loudest piece in the collection visually. The tail takes over the garment the way a peacock commands a room.

02

MEEN

The Fish

Small print, quiet placement. The kind of subtle, intimate detail you only notice up close.

03

MAMTA · ममता

Maternal Warmth

Maternal warmth that needs no explanation. A raw, timeless symbol of quiet protection and pure unconditional love.

04

GUJDAL

The Gathering

The elephant gathering. In Sohrai folklore, elephants represent quiet strength, prosperity, and communal togetherness.
